Sydney invests in Australia's research future with innovative fellowship scheme

An unprecedented investment by the University will support up to 40 new continuing positions, empowering the world's most talented emerging researchers to undertake innovative research to address some of the biggest challenges of our time. A $100 million investment and a cornerstone of the University’s 2032 Strategy, the Sydney Horizon Fellowship scheme is the first of its kind in Australia and among the most generous university fellowships in the world. The scheme, which focuses on research in climate change, health and sustainability, is expected to be hugely popular with both local and international researchers. It offers up to 40 continuing positions, commencing with a five-year research-focused fellowship which includes training and mentoring, a competitive salary and a generous research funding package. Open to all disciplines, research programs could include the development of novel technologies, biomedical, legal, business, design, policy and political instruments.

Collegiate High Schools to Launch Biomedical Engineering Technology Academy

St. Petersburg Collegiate High Schools will open a new academy devoted to biomedical engineering technology (BMET) at the St. Petersburg College Tarpon Springs Campus in Fall 2023. BMET Academy students can complete an Associate in Science in Biomedical Engineering Technology while simultaneously earning their high school diploma – completely free of charge. Funded by a Future Florida Critical Workforce Needs Grant, the A.S. degree trains students to meet the growing need for biomedical equipment repairers, who maintain the sophisticated medical devices that patients’ lives depend on. The BMET Academy will help build a pipeline of personnel for health care, industry, research and educational institutions. “Employment opportunities for technicians are expected to expand greatly in the next decade,” said Natavia Middleton, Dean of Natural Sciences and Engineering at SPC. Academy graduates will be prepared for careers in a hot job market, where they can earn an average salary of $49,910 in the United States, $47,130 in Florida, and $46,620 in the Tampa Bay area. “It’s called ‘critical needs’ for a reason, and these are good-paying jobs,” said Jackie Skryd, Vice President of Workforce Development & Corporate Partnerships at SPC. “Our medical device field is upward of $47,000 with just a certification. If they get a four-year degree and some experience, it’s double that.” The new academy joins St. Petersburg College’s lauded Collegiate High Schools ecosystem, which opened its first charter school in 2004 at the college’s St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus. A North Pinellas County option in Tarpon Springs, Florida, was opened in 2019, and the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math High School at the college’s Downtown Center in St. Petersburg launched in Fall 2022.

Korea gears up to train physician-scientists by joining hands with US-based organisations

Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with US-based Massachusetts General Hospital, a founding member of the Mass General Brigham healthcare system and a world-class research-oriented hospital, and the biotech firm Moderna. Through the MoU with Mass General, KAIST will explore cooperation with an innovative ecosystem created through the convergence of medicine and engineering. In particular, KAIST’s goal is to develop a Korean-style training programme and implement a differentiated educational programme when establishing the science and technology-oriented medical school in the future by further strengthening the science and engineering part of the training including a curriculum on artificial intelligence (AI) and the likes there of. Also, in order to foster innovative physician-scientists, KAIST plans to pursue cooperation to develop programmes for exchange of academic and human resources including programmes for student and research exchanges and a programme for students of the science and technology-oriented medical school at KAIST to have a chance to take part in practical training at Mass General. The MoU between KAIST and Moderna will focus to foster medical experts in cooperation with KAIST Graduate School of Medical Science and Engineering (GSMSE), and plans to cooperate in various ways in the future, including collaborating for development of vaccine and new drugs, virus research, joint mRNA research, and facilitation of technology commercialisation.

Indian Health Ministry introduces SAKSHAM Learning Management Information System

Rajesh Bhushan, Union Health Secretary has launched the SAKSHAM (Stimulating Advanced Knowledge for Sustainable Health Management), a Learning Management Information System (LMIS). This digital learning platform has been developed by the National Institute of Health & Family Welfare (NIHFW), New Delhi. SAKSHAM is a dedicated and unified platform for providing online training and medical education to all health professionals in the country. This digital learning platform will ensure inclusive capacity building of health professionals from primary health centres located in rural and remote areas all the way up to tertiary care and corporate hospitals in metropolitan cities. Currently SAKSHAM: LMIS is hosting more than 200 public health and 100 clinical courses through online mode. Health professionals can register themselves for these courses on the portal and get the certification after undergoing requisite training and qualifying the required assessment criteria. SAKSHAM is an initiative of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India which provides all health-related training programmes to healthcare professionals of the country in digital mode.

Australian PhD graduates ill equipped in current job market: Study

Australia’s Monash University study into the employability of PhD graduates has found that a PhD qualification alone does not guarantee long-term employment outcomes. In the current labour market there is increasing pressure on graduates to develop and leverage their own networks in order to obtain employment. Employment outcomes are determined by many contributing factors, such as the personal and professional networks students have formed, the discipline area and institution, graduating from a Group of Eight University, and graduating from a non-medical and health-science based PhD degree. These many contributing factors highlight that employability outcomes result from the development and utilisation of a range of resources, not just a qualification alone. According to the study, a three year PhD course is too short a time for graduates to develop their expertise. As a result, graduates have to rely on their previous degrees in order to obtain employment outcomes and kick-start their careers. Graduates who succeed in obtaining employment not only expand but also leverage their social networks. Non-technical skills, such as communication, planning and project management, problem-solving, and analytical skills play an important role in the employment outcomes of PhD graduates.

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare hosts career exploration event

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare recently presented to high school students at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Memphis highlighting the many diverse employment opportunities within the healthcare field. “By presenting to smaller groups, the students are more engaged and ask more questions,” said Dexter McKinney, director of talent planning strategies for Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare. “These students are looking for opportunities where they can grow their interests and excel in a job they love. Anyone in healthcare knows those opportunities are endless, especially if you want to make a difference in the lives of others.” A cross-section of departments and roles were represented during the presentation, including supply operations, community engagement, pharmacy, laboratory and cardiovascular services. “When our students think of a hospital, they usually see a nurse or doctor,” said Erica Stewart, a program director for the Boys and Girls Club. “We appreciate Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare for opening our students’ minds about all the many meaningful careers that support a large healthcare system.” Several students participating in the Boys and Girls Club after-school program are learning skills that will set them apart when they begin applying for jobs. “I’m interested in the behind-the-scenes of a hospital, especially how supplies and materials are distributed,” said high school senior Cedrick Daniels. “Through the Boys and Girls Club skills training programs, I’m learning how to operate a forklift, which I know will be valuable experience for a position with the logistics team.”

DiMe launches its first individual course “Applied Digital Health Ethics”

Digital Medicine Society (DiMe) launched its first individual course offering, “Applied Digital Health Ethics”, a topic that is foundational to the industry. Digital health is expected to be a $549 billion dollar industry by the year 2030 and comprises individuals from fields ranging from medical, technology, cyber, research, patients, and caregivers. The course is part of the new Digital Medicine Academy, which DiMe launched in August 2022 to unite digital health education and training under one umbrella. Applied Digital Health Ethics will address the fact that, to date, there is no universal language, policies, or understanding of the role of ethics in digital medicine. As the field embraces the digitization of healthcare to improve lives, novel ethical challenges are emerging and collectively, industry leaders have the opportunity to set the moral and ethical standards for what it means to care for people in the digital era of healthcare. The course is based on the concept that ethical digital medicine is the intentional digitization of healthcare for the betterment of all individuals and systems while avoiding willful ignorance of harms. “Everyone working in our field – from citizen scientists and cybersecurity experts, to data scientists and clinical scientists, alongside our payer and policy colleagues – will be faced with new, ethical challenges, and their decisions will determine whether and how digital medicine solutions are equitable solutions, said Jennifer Goldsack DiMe CEO. “Getting the industry aligned and trained correctly today is critical as digital medicine grows.” As the professional home for the digital medicine industry, DiMe is uniquely and effectively positioned to lead this effort. Singapore unveils talent development strategy to boost Healthtech and Biotech ecosystem

SGInnovate, a Deep Tech ecosystem builder and investor backed by the Singapore government, has launched Deep Tech Talent Central (DTTC), an integrated strategy for solving talent challenges across emerging tech sectors. In additon, it has launched Helix Immersion Programme, an industry training programme for academic and research professionals in the biotech sector. Heng Swee Keat, Deputy Prime Minister launched the programme along with Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies, and SGInnovate’s partners from across the Deep Tech community. Considering Singapore’s RIE2025 initiative, SGInnovate’s Helix Immersion Programme will support Singapore’s growing biomedical and biotech companies. Biomedical researchers and academic professionals will gain experience in both lab and non-lab settings at fast-growing companies through this one-year on-the-job training program. With DTTC, organisations and talent can streamline their interactions to resolve demand- and supply-side issues in two major areas – “training and community building” and “building the Deep Tech job market”. DTTC is Singapore’s first and only one-stop talent gateway for the emerging tech ecosystem. By creating curated training programmes, DTTC aims to facilitate domain-specific, open access sharing with experts and industry leaders, as well as addressing prevailing skills gaps. Eventually, DTTC collects data to offer insights into trends and the movement of talent. SGInnovate will amplify DTTC’s efforts by involving government agencies such as ESG, EDB and A*STAR, as well as various VCs, IHLs, corporates, consultancies, and startups into the DTTC platform. The specialised work placement initiative provides candidates with exposure to commercial biomedical technology operations. In addition to training 100 HIP fellows by 2025, the programme aims to address talent gaps identified in SGInnovate’s recent whitepaper, Bridging the Talent Gaps in Singapore’s Biotech Sector.
